Her Majesty The Queen to Bid Farewell to QE2

May 30, 2008 by admin ·

Cunard Line today confirms details of the farewell visit of Her Majesty The Queen to Queen Elizabeth 2 in Southampton on Monday 2 June 2008. This is in recognition of QE2 leaving the Cunard fleet in November this year.

The Queen will begin by touring the vessel and meeting many crew members, some of whom have served on board since QE2 entered service in 1969 and others who went with the ship when she was requisitioned as a troop carrier in the Falklands Conflict. Later she will attend a Reception and Lunch on board with 300 guests, including the former Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher.

Both the newest and longest-serving female crewmembers will play a role in the visit. While on the bridge, The Queen will give a signal to Cadet Jennifer Haynes, who joined QE2 in April 2008, to sound QE2’s whistle to salute Cunard’s current flagship Queen Mary 2, which is also in port on 2 June and was named by The Queen in January 2004. Queen Mary 2 will respond by sounding her whistle in salute of Her Majesty’s visit. After disembarking, Her Majesty will be presented with 55 red roses by QE2’s Executive Housekeeper Roz Price Evans who is the longest-serving female member of crew; this is to mark 55 years to the day since The Queen’s Coronation.

The Queen will also meet nine QE2 Captains including Captain Peter Jackson who became Master of QE2 in 1973 and who took the ship to the Falklands in 1982.

QE2, the most famous ship in the world, and for 35 years the flagship of the Cunard fleet, was launched by The Queen at Clydebank on 20 September 1967 – forty years ago last year.

Since then the ship has travelled over 5.6 million nautical miles, more than any other ship; has carried over 2.5 million guests; has completed 25 World Cruises; and has crossed the Atlantic 803 times. She leaves Cunard service in November 2008 prior to starting a new life in Dubai as a first class hotel and entertainment destination.

Her Majesty The Queen has visited QE2 twice since the launch – on 1 May 1969, immediately prior the Maiden Voyage, and on 27 July 1990 to mark Cunard Line’s 150th anniversary.

Cunard’s President and Managing Director, Carol Marlow, comments:

“We are delighted and honoured that Her Majesty The Queen has chosen to visit QE2 to wish her farewell. Her Majesty has taken a close interest in the ship over the last forty years, having launched the ship, visited twice and reviewed the ship four times, including during the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of D Day. I am certain this final visit will be a memorable occasion for all involved”.

Doug Morrison, Port Director, ABP Southampton, says:

“It’s wonderful to welcome Her Majesty The Queen and Baroness Thatcher to bid farewell to QE2. This event, and the recent meeting of Cunard’s three Queens in April for the last time ever, have both highlighted the important role that the Port of Southampton has played historically, and will continue to play, as Cunard’s homeport.”

OV Caribbean Brochure Out

May 29, 2008 by admin ·

Ocean Village has unveiled details of its new multi-platform advertising campaign, launching 2 June, to support its Caribbean winter 2008/2009 season. The heavy weight campaign, across television, radio and print media, will focus on the Granada, Central and, for the first time, Meridian TV regions with a £1 million total marketing spend.

The TV creative follows on from Ocean Village’s first television advertising campaign in January 2008 and again features the voice of Tamzin Outhwaite and exploits the distinctive hot colours of the Ocean Village logo.

The 30 second TV ad will feature on ITV1 in the Granada, Central and Meridian regions from 2 June 2008 in a 4 week heavyweight campaign targeting the key 35-54 year old age group with an emphasis on peak time programming.  The creative plays upon the brand’s strapline ‘the cruise for people who don’t do cruises’ and features a £749 lead price for a week’s fly-cruise in the Caribbean. A strong call to action promotes booking with The Co-operative Travel in the Granada and Central regions and with Cruise Thomas Cook in Meridian. The Co-operative Travel group is the largest travel group in the north west of England and Cruise Thomas Cook is the largest cruise retailer in the UK.  The advertisement will also run on Thomas Cook TV.

The execution features pseudo-animation created by filming live action sequences against a green screen.   The creative aims to reinforce Ocean Village’s easy-going, casual cruising message.  It opens on a Caribbean beach scene as a girl makes off with a sunhat from a man snoozing a hammock.  She walks along the shoreline past snorkellers, windsurfers and mountain bikers to a laid-back beach bar as dolphins unexpectedly  appear close by.  The action then moves to the top deck onboard ship.  The girl meets up with the man from the hammock – who pinches his hat back

The commercial was developed by the in-house Ocean Village team in partnership with production house Tigervision.

Complementing the TV activity is a 40 second radio advertising campaign on Century North West and Smooth in Granada, Heart 10 and 100.7 in the Central region and by Ocean, Total 2CR, Wave 105 and Southern FM in Meridian.  Nationally, Classic FM will feature advertisements throughout the Mylene Class and Alex James shows which address the younger end of the station’s audience. The radio ads also feature the voice of Tamzin Outhwaite with a call to action through TEXT and by visiting local ABTA travel agents.

The broadcast campaign is supported by a national 6 week print media campaign in key midmarket and quality papers.

In-store marketing materials for travel agents include posters and shelf wobblers reflecting the graphic visual style of the TV campaign and strong calls to action.

The new Ocean Village brochure, which is released on 2 June, features the company’s Caribbean 2008/2009 itineraries as well as full details for the new Mediterranean summer 2009 itineraries when Ocean Village sails the Eastern Med for the first time with maiden calls at Venice, Cairo (from Port Said) and Istanbul.

Comments Gill Haynes, Head of Marketing, Ocean Village, ‘Building on the success of our first foray into TV advertising in January this year, the new Caribbean campaign aims to demonstrate to cruise virgins just how much cruising has lightened up, loosened up and left the days of bow ties and tiaras far behind.  The ad projects a distinctive, quirky brand personality that television audiences can already recognise and identify as inalienably Ocean Village.  The campaign puts our Caribbean holidays on TV for the first time and we’re delighted to be partnered by The Co-operative Travel in the north and midlands and Cruise Thomas Cook in the south, both of which have shown real commitment to driving growth in the UK cruise market.’

RCI Selects Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas as Names for Its Project Genesis Ships

May 23, 2008 by admin ·

An oasis is commonly defined as a fertile area in an arid region or a place of refuge, relief, or pleasant contrast. Today, Royal Caribbean International adds another use of the term, defining it as the official name for the cruise line’s newest and most awe-inspiring class of cruise ships, until now referred to by the code name “Project Genesis.”

The name Oasis of the Seas was selected from more than 91,000 entries in Royal Caribbean’s “Name that Ship” contest, which the cruise line launched on January 18 in partnership with USA TODAY. Entrants were invited to submit two names ending in “of the Seas” that best encapsulate the universe of experiences a Royal Caribbean cruise provides guests. The contest marks the first time members of the general public, outside of the cruise industry, have been given the opportunity to name a cruise ship.

The winning combination of names, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, was submitted by George Weiser, of Livonia, Michigan. Weiser’s well-chosen names scored the highest among all contest entries considered by a panel of judges, and earned him the honor of naming not only the world’s next largest and most innovative cruise ships, but the entire class of the new ships, the Oasis-class. Weiser is joined by Jennifer Conley, of Robertsville, Missouri, who suggested Mystique of the Seas and also Allure of the Seas. Conley is also a winner in the naming contest for earning the second-highest score.

“Our customers are remarkably passionate about Royal Caribbean,” said Adam Goldstein, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “This naming contest has been a fantastic expression of their interest and commitment. We are thrilled to announce these two names and grateful to USA Today for partnering with us.”

The “Name that Ship” contest was judged by a panel of industry experts including Lauren Teton, founding partner of Name One!, which specializes in finding unique names for products and business entities; John Maxtone-Graham, maritime historian, lecturer and author of numerous books, including the latest, “Normandie: France’s Legendary Art Deco Ocean Liner”; and Albert Mehrabian, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Psychology at UCLA and author of more than 14 books, including “Baby Name Report Card: Beneficial and Harmful Baby Names.”

“Taking into account the remarkable sea-going destination Oasis of the Seas will be, the name selection evokes an appropriate feeling of verdant comfort and luxury,” said John Maxtone-Graham, maritime historian. “I was very pleased with the final selection and for being invited to take part in the contest.”

When launched in late 2009, Oasis of the Seas will be the largest and most revolutionary cruise ship in the world. An architectural marvel at sea, she will span 16 decks, encompass 220,000 gross registered tons, carry 5,400 guests, and feature 2,700 staterooms. The ship will homeport in Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 2010, she will be joined by a sister ship, Allure of the Seas
