Costa Two China Awards
December 1, 2008 by admin ·
Costa Cruises has gained high-level market recognition in China after receiving two awards in quick succession. World Traveller Media’s ‘Top Cruise Lines of Popularity’ Award 2008 came shortly after Costa was awarded ‘Best Brand Campaign’ at Travel Weekly’s China Industry Awards 2008. These two awards demonstrate Costa Cruises’ strong leadership in the Chinese market. As the first international cruise company to enter the Chinese market three years ago, Costa has gained the approval and recognition of both the market and its consumers.
At China International Travel Mart 2008, Costa Cruises was presented with the ‘Top Cruise Lines of Popularity’ award by World Traveller Media for the second time. This is the only cruise industry recognition award in the 2008 World Traveller Awards and it reaffirms Costa’s commitment to bring new and innovative cruise products that meet the special demands of the Chinese market. A holiday experience onboard the Costa Cruises fleet, which is characterised by its Italian influences, has increasingly become the epitome of the cruise holiday option in China. More importantly, through the company’s tireless pursuit for high quality services, Costa continues to enjoy a soaring consumer satisfaction rate in the Chinese market.
As the leading international brand in the Chinese cruise market, Costa truly understands the needs and preferences of Chinese holidaymakers and has continuously introduced bold and eye-catching marketing campaigns to educate, foster and grow the company profile. With this spirit of innovation and dedication to leverage on new media and new channels to reach out to a wider target audience group, Costa Cruises was awarded the ‘Best Brand Campaign’ in Travel Weekly’s China Industry Awards 2008. Costa won the votes of almost 600,000 readers of Travel Weekly China, in a category which included all travel providers, including hotels, airlines and tourism boards. This award recognises the achievements and devotion of Costa to the China market.
Costa Cruises, the leading cruise line in Italy and Europe, was the first international company to schedule regular cruises in China and Asia. Its operations began on 3 July 2006 with the positioning of the Costa Allegra. Now Costa is the only international cruise company to operate 12 months a year in Asia. The cruise itineraries, developed in line with market demands, are based in the ports of Shanghai, Tianjin and Hong Kong. The cruises stop at several attractive destinations for Chinese visitors including Sanya, Halong Bay, Da Nang, Okinama, Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Jeju. Almost 60,000 Chinese visitors have embarked on a Costa cruise to enjoy the Italian holiday experience over the past three years.
“The two awards we received recognise our commitment and long-term contribution to the Chinese cruise market,” said Leo Liu, China General Manager of Costa Cruises. “Over the past year, we have launched numerous new marketing programmes, such as the sponsorship of Feng Xiao Gang’s latest New Year blockbuster ‘If you are the One’ which saw a production crew filming onboard Costa Allegra for almost a week. Costa remains optimistic about growth in China and the great support we have recieved from our customers, partners and Government authorities. We will continue to drive our passion to pioneer even more innovative and unique programmes in the market.”
After more than two years of developing and fostering the market in a sustainable way, China’s cruise market has now entered a new stage of development. Costa remains optimistic about the Chinese cruise economy and will be increasing its investment in China to meet the growing demands of the local marketplace. From April 2009, Costa Classica will be joining the Costa Allegra in the Chinese market. As one of the most popular ships amongst Costa’s fleet, the elegance sophistication of Costa Classica will add a new dimension to Costa’s world-famous Italian cruise style in China. More importantly, it will allow even more passengers to enjoy a wonderful and memorable cruise holiday in the Far East.

Pele Joins Costa Cruises
October 20, 2008 by admin ·
On 28 June 2009, the Costa Serena, the flagship of the Italian fleet of Costa Cruises, will depart from Venice on the first cruise dedicated to Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, better known as “Pelé”, the “O’ Rey” (the King) of world football.
The cruise, called “El crucero de Pelé – Sabor Brasil”, an exclusive and totally innovative event in the world tourism industry, is organised by Grupo Olympia, a company with more than 20 years of entertainment experience in Brazil.
During the cruise presentation press conference, held yesterday in Madrid, Pelé stated: “I would like to take this occasion to invite some of Europe’s best footballers of the 20th century to take this cruise. Passengers will include presidents of football confederations, federations and clubs as well as other big names from the sports and media world. Conferences and meetings dedicated to “today’s football” will also be held during the cruise. During my career as a footballer, I was often far from my family and my friends, but I have never forgotten the special atmosphere and the unique flavours of my country. When I began to feel “saudade”, meaning when I was homesick, what I wanted the most was to be able to experience the traditions and customs of my beloved Brazil. The Costa Serena cruise, during which everything will be focused on Brazil, will spread joy throughout the entire eastern Mediterranean, with stops in Italy, Croatia and Greece. I look forward to seeing you all on board.”
The cruise program, based on “brasileñi” (Brazilian) rhythms, atmospheres and flavours, promises to get even the most reserved of guests totally involved. The cruise will be the perfect combination of pleasure and fun, with lots of parties, festivities and musical shows involving great Brazilian performers such Alexandre Pires, Toquinho and the Grupo Sereno.
Gastronomy will also be on centre stage, with events based on Brazilian delicacies, including theme parties, like “Brasíl en Alta Mar“. There will also be an exhibition of historic collectors’ items tied to some of the great moments in Pelé’s life, with never-seen-before video clips. In other words, a real “brazileña” cruise that puts football, samba and “feijoada” in the spotlight, with everything flavoured to perfection by delicious caipiriñas.
Pelé’s cruise will not only offer relaxation and fun but also “business” opportunities for all sport professionals.

New Port Inaugurated by Costa
September 10, 2008 by admin ·
The Italian company Costa Cruises, Europe’s number one cruise line, has taken part today in the inauguration of the new passenger port in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Costa Mediterranea (85,600 gross tonnage and total guest capacity of 2,680), one of the 12 cruise ships in the Costa fleet, was the star of the event as the first ship to call at the new port built especially to accommodate cruise ships and cruise passengers. The port was built with mixed public and private investment, worth a total of US$13 billion. The first person to disembark from the Costa Mediterranea, Captain Anelito Montesarchio, was welcomed by the Governor of St. Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko.
The opening of the new port was celebrated with a performance by the Catalan theatre group ‘Fura del Baus’.
The new passenger port in St. Petersburg is the first in Russia able to accommodate the latest generation of cruise ships, whose length exceeds 300 metres. Situated on the western side of Vasiljevskiy Island, it is near the old town and a convenient gateway to the main attractions of the city. The project will occupy a total area of 400 hectares and entails several stages of development, with the work scheduled for completion by 2010. Upon its completion, the new passenger port of St. Petersburg will become the largest cruise and ferry industry project in the world. By the time it is finished the port will have seven berths, three cruise terminals and one ferry terminal. The new port’s capacity will be 12,000 passengers a day and 1.2 million passengers a year. For the time being, one cruise terminal and two 300-metre berths are operating. The project will also incorporate business centres, exhibition halls, an ‘A’ class residential development and other facilities that will change the view of the St. Petersburg’s waterfront dramatically. St. Petersburg is Russia’s busiest cruise port and one of the main cruise destinations in Northern Europe. The number of cruisers has increased from 163,000 in 2003 to an estimated 400,000 in 2008. The first foreign civilian ship, a Dutch ship, arrived in St. Petersburg 305 years ago, in the autumn of 1703. By receiving the first foreign vessel, St. Petersburg was fulfilling the mission defined by its founder, Emperor Peter the Great, ‘to open the sea gates to Europe’.

Carnival sell out to Royal Caribbean!
June 4, 2007 by admin ·
No not the company, Carnival have sold their first ever new build to Royal Caribbean. Carnival Tropicale was built in 1982 at 35,000 she is capable of carrying 1,350 passenger and marked a new era in the rise of the Carnival Corporation by being the first of numerous subsequnt new builds.
With newer and larger ships being built Carnival off loaded the Carnival Tropicale to Costa Cruises, where after a $30M refit she became Costa Tropicale. This move was short lived and in 2005 Carnival moved her from Costa Cruises to the P&O Cruises Australia fleet. Renamed Pacific Star she is currently cruising in the southern hemisphere.
The deal between Royal Caribbean and Carnival is undisclosed and as of the Pacific Star, well she will be moving to Pullmantur, the Spanish cruise line purchased by Royal Caribbean in 2006. As of yet her fourth “new” name is unknown. The date of transfer is also unannounced, however it is likely to coinside with the arrival of the 70,000-ton Pacific Dawn, Australia’s first superliner, as she joins the fleet in October 2007.

This is an additional Conquest class vessel ordered as part of a four-ship deal with Fincantieri, two of which ended up going to the Carnival brand. As a Conquest-class, it will not fit through the Panama Canal. This ship will be similar to HAL’s line of Vista-class vessels, but with Cunard’s own twists in the design and slightly larger. It will be built to Panamax standards, so it can be used in both the Atlantic and Pacific. 86% of the cabins will be outside, 71% of those with private verandahs. In September 2004 the design was enlarged as part of an order of four other ships from Fincantieri. It was originally slated for 88,000 tons and a capacity of 1968. Eleven meters were added to the length raising the tonnage to 90,000 and increasing the capacity to 2000, but the ship will still be able to transit the Panama Canal.
